1 ♦ ■ ANNA CARLOVNA BEATEN. 1 ! IN CAULFIEID CUP. | RACE WON BY AURIFER. i Dj Tel«erai>h--Pr«ss Association— Copyiigit j (Rec. October 10, 5.5 p.m.) i • Melbourne, October 18. > Caulfiold' Cup Day attracted ono of j the old-time crowds, although a better J display of fashions has been seen. Tho I lack of interest in this direction, for which tho uncertainty of tho weather probably accounted, was compensated for by the interest in the racing programme. There was probably never a more exciting Caulfiela Cup. This was partly owing to the extraordinary circumatanoes attaching to tho two horses of the one owner —Anna Carlovna and. Sea Prince—two candidates that appeared to give Mr. E. A. Connolly a mortgage over tho raco. Tho contest itself provided an exciting struggle, and a new record was established, tho result proving once again that prominent porformors in tho Metropolitan and Epsom Haudicaps may bo expected to about win the Caulfield Cup. Wingarara, tho Grand National Hurdles winnor, performed well in tho first race. Ho took command aftor going half a mile, and was never afterwards headed. His time equalled the Caulfield record for the distance over hurdles. Despite Traquotte's penalty of 101b. for Wednesday s win, sne simply .romped away from her stable mate, Maharajah, in tho Gwyn Nursery. Ini tho Cup race an excellent start was effected. Anna Carlovna and Uncle Sam' both hold favourablo positions for tho run home, and both names were proclaimed, but Uncle Sam died away while Smiti brought Aurifer along from tho distance with a smothering run. Sea Princo also looked dangerous near tho homo turn. With Aurifer, Mr. Morton repeated tho performance of 5 Flavinius, coming fresh from the Syd- ' jiey meeting to walk away witn tho Caulfield Cup. i? Although there wero only five start- ' ers in the Steeples, a good race resultt cd, the pacd being forced for tho great portion of tho race. When Jack Wind- >• sor fell, he broke his near shoulder, s and was afterwards shot. Comus's fall s was nearly serious to Koops, who a escaped with painful though not serious i injuries. i There was a rumour that M'Lachlan a intended ridiing Anna Carlovna with - electric spurs. _ The matter was mon--0 tioried to the jockey by the a towards, r and M'Lachlan laughingly repudiated a it. Ho says the Chip race, especially 1 the closing stages, was the fastest ho r ever rode In. a Details of tho racing aro as follow - OBY HURDLE HANDICAP, of 250 f sovs.; second horse 35 sovs., and , third horse 15 sovs. from tho stake, s Two miles one furlong and eixtyF four yards. 1 Mr. L.
