MOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Bt Glencoe.] There will bo racing at Gisborno on Thursday and Friday- next. The Wellington Racing Club's Spring meeting, for which record acceptances have been received, opens .at Trentham on Saturday. An' unusually largo number of horses will bo under silk, and the secretary (Mr. A. E. Whyte) is experiencing difficulty in arranging accommodation at tho courso for the largo number of mounts engaged. Tho fact that Quarantine has been allowed to drop out of his Trentham engagements on Saturday may mean that tho black horse will not havo a race beforo the New Zealand Cup. His supporters for the big raco will hardly relish this. Another pajmeilt for the Now Zealand Cup is due on Friday. Emperador did not form the ranks of winners at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting, but at least he displayed far better form than Vice-Admiral, who camo back from Australia to sweep tho board at the Cup meeting of 1911. As a yearling Beragoon cost his present owner, Mr. J. E. O'Brien, 70D guineas. Tho colt has now won four races, as under:—The Breeders' Plato, £1651; tho Gimcrack Stakes, £725; the Maribyrnong Plato, £1507; the A.J.C. Derby, £'3750. Mr. D. Buick's mare Tangimoana, by San Fran—Waingongoro, has foaled a lilly to Aborbrothock at Upper Riccartoh. where she was sent to be mated with Antagonist. BUbs has been allotted Bst. 61b. in the Stowards' Handicap at Riccarton. The weight of Hillenois, which was alsc omitted from tho telegraphed list, is 6st. 71b. It is reported that' the Caulfield Owner-trainer, E. A. Connolly, supported Amia Carlovna to win him £64,000 in the Caulfield Cup, in which slio was beaten by Aurifer. Tho ohampion Molbourne trottor Denver Huon (in charge of M. Edwards, formerly of Christchurch) will arrive hard by the Sydney steamer on Wednesday. He is to contest tho Trotting Cup noxt month. Mr. J. 13. Roid will have a representative in both tho Great Northern Guineas and Welcomo Stakes, to be run at the Auckland R.C.'s Spring Meeting, Ogier, by Charlemagne 11. from Nautiloid, will carry Mr. Reicl's colourß ir the Great Northern Guineas, and Charinilla, by Charlemagne 11, from thai noted brood mare Armilla, will racf in the AVelcome Stakes.' Gigandra, the champion sprinter ol Australia, will bo offered for salo ai auotion in Sydney at an early dato. Trainer G. Price and Jockcy A Oliver motored from Awapuni to th( city yestorday. -As the result of ai accident on tho jourrfoy, Oliver received some cuts and bruises. Ho was attended by a medical man on arrival, and l liac to go to bed at his hotel, but will probably be well onougli to be about to day. •'H.M." writes: "Your vory pointoc romarira ro Anna Carlovna for tho Caul field Cup caused me much amusement IE ever a horse looked a certainty for i race it was Aurifer for Saturday's Cup Ho was third in tho Epsom with Bst 51b., and third in tho Metropolitan wit! Bst. 31b., and this race was run in re cord time. Horses that have run wcl in these races havo generally gone or and won at Caulfield. Flavinius was t caso. in point, and ho was also ownet by Mr. F. Merton." [It seems regret able that "H.M." did not think _ol writing on Friday, instead of loavins liis knowledgeable pronouncement unti the result of the race had confirmed hil view of the probable result. As most people know, there is a timo and placi for everything, and it seems to "Glen coo" that the time for summing up rac ing probabilities is; before tho eventnot after.] Assorting American racing is killed, f London correspondent says:' "Racinp has boon murdered in Now York Stati by tho anti-gambling party. It is r sport which cannot exist without betting or the pari-mutuel, and, melancholy though it in to record, tho attempt to revive the sport this summei lms failed. Tho racecourses in Nom York State will bo closed for good now and will, no doubt, soon pass into thf hands of tho builder. Well, this disastrous ending ought to wake us up tc tho grave menace presented by tht much-discussed Betting Inducement; Bill, and give us redoubled energy tc combat tho mischievous meddlings ol the Anti-Gambling League. The breeding industry will die in the State, and many of the great breeding establishments will no doubt be transferred tc Europo in tho courso of a year or so." FIXTURES. Oct. 2.1 and 24—Poverty Bay T.C. Spring Oct. 23 and 27.—Wellington R.C. Spring Oct 27.—Waverley-Waitotan R.C. Annual Oct. 27 and 28.—Gore R.C.'s Sprintr Oct. 28 and 29.—Greymouth J.C. Spring
