; ROWING. MEETINC OF N.Z. ASSOCIATION. AMATEUR DEFINITION. f Tho annual meeting of tho Now Zealand Amateur Rowing Association was ' held on Saturday night. Mr. R. W. M'Villy presided. Others present woro: Messrs. E. Innes, E. Coghlan, W. Bedford (Auckland), F. D. Kcstcven, R. M. Gentles, L. V. Hulbort Canterbury), F. 11. Galvin (Marlborough), A. D. Bayfield (Nolson), R. M. Isaacs (Otago), W. Simm (Hawko's Bay), E. E. Hammond (Southland), G. Lauchlan (Wanganui), J. E. Widdop, C. 11. Lawrcnce (Wellington). j The council of the association brought 3 forward a proposal to so alter tho defini--3 tion of "amateur" so that it would apply to all branches of athletics. Tho j proposal was heavily defeated. Two . delegates stated that they would have J supported it but for tho position of Leaguo footballers. , Sir. M'Villy, when speaking to the 2 subject, expressed regret at having no- . ticed in tho annual report a statement , to tho effect that Australia would not - bo under any obligation to send crews , to New. Zealand, but ho added that ho ~ did not think that that decision should deter Now Zealand from sending com- , petitors to Australia. Ho would like . to seo Now Zealand adopt an amateur ; status which would mako its rowers eligiblo for inter-Stato competitions. 3 Amateur status would, ho thought, i provo a difficulty in connection with tlio a Olympic gathering. Mr. Kestoven considered that the proposal, if carried, would have tho effect of narrowing down club life. It was a detrimental idea. Now Zealand reprosontativos had been over to Sydney about five times, but the Sydney men a would not come hero, and, therefore, New Zealand should not specially go „ out of their way to considor tho Austra- | lians. a _ Mr. Bayfiold said that owing to the inter-Stato definition a Now Zealander 0 who went to Australia would r.ot bo j. eligible to compete as a State ropresontative.' In other sports Now Zoalanders did well against any competitors, and ho did not seo why rowerß n should be hampered, and, in effect, told: n "You may becomo champions of Now u Zealand, but not champions of tho a world." 3 _ Mr. M'Villy remarked that the posiY tion of Leaguo footballers had been cleared up, and. ho did not think it right that men who were professionals in other sports should bo allowed into |f amateur rowing. Tho Rowing Associr ation should bo amatour right through, and encourago amateurism in other sports. 0 Winn a division was taken, Nelson's was tho only support accorded tho motion. 10 Officers Electcd. [r Officers wero elected as follow:— 3 President, Mr. J. Clark (Auckland); . vice-presidents, Messrs. A. I. Farmer l 0 (Auckland(, and A. S. Biss (Wellington) ; council, Messrs. E. Isaacs n (Otago); secretary and treasurer, Mr. l. A. D. Bayfiold (Wellington); auditor, i 0 Mr. G. C. Faclie. Is Auckland Cots Big Mooting. d _It was decided■:that the"noxt' cham- )- pionship regatta should bo held in n Auckland provided the courso was in h Waitomata Harbour. . Auckland applied for the event; the idea was to l- bring it on at Exhibition timo. 3, e Intor-Assoclatlon Fours. 1- Auckland's motion to add an interg association fours event to tho championship programme was referred back. 3- Sir. Innes said that tho Auckland Asson ciation was willing to give a trophy n for tho ovent. r. Mr. Isaacs raised in opposition to the i- motion tho point that tho championship n meeting was not a suitable occasion for r-' tho event, as crows would not bo able to it preparo for it. :e Mr. Lachlan favoured holding the proposed event on "a dato to be fixed by if tho assoeiation." it Finally, tho matter was referred back to Auokland for further consideration ; t. and tho Auckland delegation gave nolo tico of a motion to tho effect that a :n special meeting of the New Zealand As>d sociation should be held as early as I- possible to doal with tho question. id) o- Weight of Boats. Defeat was tho portion of tho Southland Association's motion: "That tho 1 weight definition for maiden fours and , maiden pair and double sculler proviously in force bo again adopted." a The idea was to have boats of 1951b. (as P- formerly), instead of any weight (as V at present). Delegates said that boats ' n were now ligliter, and that they thought it would work to the detriment of sculling to go back to the old stipulation. in The council was directed to consider j} the Wellington Rowing Club's applicatl tion to alter colours.. An application by J. M. Jackson for 3r reinstatement was declined. IK
