THE LATE MR. HAMILTON.

— 6 AN APPRECIATION. Appreciative remarks in regard to the late iUr. A. Hamilton, Director of tho Dominion Museum in Wellington, wore made by Mr. E. R. Waite on his return to Christchurc'h from Australia last week. Mr. Waite said that he had had a very busy time in Sydney and Melbourne. On reaching Wellington on Wednesday lie was informed of the death of his close friend aud colleague, and the sad news was a severe blow. Although of lato Mr. Hamilton had demoted his life principally to tho work and arts of the Maori, he had a ' wide knowledge of New Zealand's fauna, and his bibliographical memoirs were o£ great assistance to workers in many branches of natural history. Mr. Hamilton had been recently much worried over the tardiness of tho Government to provide suitable accommodation for t'lio valuablo collections which he and his talented predecessor, Sir James Hector, had amassed, and had expressed a fear that he would not live to seo his hopes realised. It would he very difficult to obtain anybody quali-fied-to succeed Mr. Hamilton. In fact ho did not think that any capable man would undertake the duties of Direotor of the Dominion Museum while the present unsatisfactory condition of the institution continued.
