The news that Mr. Alan H. Bur(jojn«, M.P. for North Kensington, is visiting Australia, has some significance, when taken in conjunction with the recent naval transformation which haß practically eliminated a whole British Fleet unit from those waters. ,Mr. Burgoyno, who may visit Now Zealand, is a Unionist and a Tariff Reformer/ and a member of tho firm of P. B. Burgoyno and Co. Ho has travelled extensively, having previously visited tho Dutch East Indies and Australasia. He is profoundly interested in tho naval armaments of tho world, and possibly there is no man_ in politics outside the Ministry (or in it for that matter) who has at his finger-tips tho naval information possossod by Mr. Burgoyno. He is sy member and associate of the Institution of Naval Architects; honorary treasurer to the Navy League, honorary seorotary of the 1900 Club, and a member of tho Naval and Military Committee of tho London Chamber or Commerce. Mr. Burgoyno went East during the Russian-Japanese hostilities, and as Port Arthur was arrested as a spy by the Russians, and imprisoned. He has published Goveral books dealing with tho balance of naval nower, including "A Short History of Submarine ' Navigation" (1002). "Trafalgar Re-fought" (1905). "The War Inovitablo" (1908), and "Lusts of Hate" (1912}. With Mr. Burgoyno in Sydney at suon an important time in the naval history of tho Commonwealth, it will not be surprising to learn of another publication aoaling with naval development in tho Southern Pacific. Tladame Clara Butt and Mr. Kennorley Rumford left Wellington for the south by tho Wahine last evening. Major J. G. Hughes, of the Headquarters Staff, has iwurnod to duty after his annual leave. ; Mr. Arthur M. My era, M.P. for Auckland East, will leave Wellington for Auoldand to-day. Ho will leavo Auckland for England, via Vancouver, by tho Niagara on Saturday noxt. Ha expeots to return to the Dominion about June next, Sir Ohas. Bowon, Speaker of the Legislative Counoil. was a passengor for the south by the Wahine last evening. Mr. W. Rolfo, stationmaster at Napier, haa dooided to retire on superannuation at tho end of November, whoa he will have completed 40 years'- service in tho Railway Department. It ia reported that Mr. Williams, at present at Gisborno, is to be promoted to Na- , pier. Mr. F. W. Grainger, manager at Patea for the South Taranaki Steam Ship Company, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Ho returns to Patea on Tuesday. . Mr. Mark Cohen, who haa boon, staying at the Hotel Windsor, returned yesterday to Dunedin. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Gilbert were passengers by the Ulimaroa yesterday for Sydney, en route for Soutn Africa. Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justioo, left for the south by the Wahine last evening. Tlio Rev. L. H. Fenn, late ourato or St. Mark's, Wellington, who has been appointed vicar of St. Peter's parish, Pahiatua, and Mrs. Fenn and family l have arrived in Pahiatua. The ceremony of instituting tho Rev. Croft. lately of Castlomaino, Victoria, has Dean .engaged by fElie Montezuma Sluicing Company, and will leave Wellington to-day for the sluicing , claim. Burton has been invited to oontinue as superintendent of tho New Plymouth Methodist circuit, for another year. The Rev. E. Bandy (Stratford) has been invited to continue as second minister, and tho Rev. H. 1. Read as third minister. Mr. G. L. Usher, who has been connected with tho municipal lifo of Port Chalmers for many years, was presented with a handsomely-illuminated addro6s in recognition of his long and valuable services several daj's ago. Mr. Usher has been Town Clork of Port Chalmers from 1866 to 1973, auditor from 1879 ,to 1884, and councillor during tho years 1874 to 1878 and 1908 to 1913. Tlio Mayor (Mr. D. M.
