PITIFUL SCENES AT THE

PIT-HEAD.

London, Octobor 15. Further details of tho rescue work at the Universal Mino, Senghonydd, Cardiff, whore over nine hundred men were entombed as the result of an explosion, followed by iiro, show that Moore, tho first man rescued yesterday, was; 1200 yards from the shaft. The rescuers burst into cheers on the first realisation of their hopes of any living persons being found. Moore recovered after a long period of artificial respiration. Proceeding, tho rescuers found a dozen dead and living, also living horses, huddled together. . Another party in tho west pit discovered Bert Williams, a footballer and local boxer, unconscious amidst a group of sixteen dead, including a mnn and boy clasping hands. Of the 935 men who descended into tho mino, 532 have been rescued, 80 bodies have been found, and 323 are still entombed.

Tho rescuers got into touch with 29 men, who are alive, but there is no further news of them at present. Tho firo was extinguished ; but has since restarted, and is burning badly. Hopes of further rescues have been abandoned. PATHETIC SCENES AT THE PIT-HEAD. (Rec. Octobor 16. 11.15 p.m.) London, October 16. Many of the bodies recovered from the mine had died from the; effects of tho gas. Others, again, met with violent deaths from tho blast of tho oxplosion.'

One of the rescuers was killed by a fall of coal from tho roofing of tho workings.
