INTERCEDES FOR CAWNPORE MOSQUE RIOTERS.

Delhi, Octobor 16. A section of tho press sharply criticises Lord Hardingo's clemency. Tho Cawnporo "Statesman" says that tho Viceroy's aption may create 'a Situation of tho'utmost gravity. Tho "Englishman" (Caloutta)_ declares that tho act of clemency is tho greatest blow to British prestige sinco' tho Maiwand disaster of 1880.

Tho "Daily News" congratulates the Viceroy on his courage. ( The "Bengali" says that the Viceroy's clemency forges another link in tho chain of love.

Numerous Mohammedan societies have thanked Lorcl Hardinge.

Religions bitterness was aroused' in August last by tho demolition of a part of the Maclili Bazar Mosque at Cawnporo. A serious riot occurred in which a. number of rioters wero killed and injured, while tlio police also sustained numerous casualties. Thirteen rioters killed and thirty wounded while one policeman was shot and about forty injured. Numerous arrests were made. The riot was the sequel to innumerable meetings that had beon held all; over India and Burma for two purposes(l) To condemn the action of the Government in demolishing 'part of the Jlachli Bazar Mosque at Cawnpore to allow for street improvements, and to demand its restoration and (2) to protest against any possible coercion by Great Britain of Turkey in regard to the recapture of Adrianoplo Ifrom. the :Bnl>garians, as otherwise the worst effects would be produced on loval Moslems.
