MANAWATU TRAINS.
GENERAL MANAGER TO REPORT.
The Railways Committee of the Houso of Representatives reported yesterday that it had 110 recommendation to maka upon a petition from a large number of suburban residents along the Manawatu line, asking that the trains upon which thoy depend should be run to and from Lambton Station instead of' Thorndon Station, as at present. . > When tho report was . presented to tho House, Mr. W. H. I). Bell said \ that he regrotted .that-the Railways ) Committee, had como to tho decision, it had, but recognised that it could. 1 not have done otherwise, in view of the' )iaturo of the expert evidenco tendered 1 by officials of the Railway Department,, and particularly in view of tho fact that' no expert evidence had been called upon, • the othor side.. Residents,of tho sub-, urban area along the Manawatu lino considered that the view taken by tho officials was wrong. In any i;aso t if it was a fact that these suburban residents could not be provided with a decent railway service until the new Central Railway Station in Wellington had been' built, tho erection of that station should bo pushed on with all s]»ed. Subsequently Mr. Bell informed a re* porter that he had interviewed the W. H. Herriqs on tho subject of tlitf Manawatu trains, and that the Minister had promised that/as soon as Mr. Hiloy, the new General (Manager of Railways, took office tho whole of the' reports, thai had been furnished in regard _to that Manawatu trains would be submitted to; him, and he would be asked to make > an independent report.
