JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Corrcppondenti.) PALMERSTON. His Honour tho Chief Justice yestordav gave judgment in a claim for £151 as half cost of a dividing fejice. The parties to the action were tho Aorangi Land Drainage Board versus W. B. Pearce, farmer of Rangiotu. His Honour awarded plaintiffs tho lull amount with costs.

The Rev. A. M'Donakl Aspland, of Wellington, was inducted to the charge of tho Congregational Church on Wednesday by the Rev. Reed Glasson, of The Terrace Church, assisted by tho Rev. W. A. Evans, of Newtown. Mr. Gray, a deacon of tho Courtenav I'laco Church, Wellington, was also present, and there was, a large attendance of local ministers, members, and friends of the church. 111 the course of reminiscent speeches on tho early days tho Mayor (Air. The interest which prevailed over a former lawsuit affecting the right ,of flax-millers to drain into rivers is now recalled by a case in which W. B. V. Pearce has moved for an injunction to restrain the Aorangi Land Drainage Board and Donald Green, flax-miller, from draining flax refuse into a stream. Tho Chief Justice has granted an interim injunction against Green, tho question of costs being reserved. Plaintiff's affidavit alleged that the effluent matter killed thousands of eels and other fish. PAHIATUA. Messrs. A. M'Farlane and E. Sullivan intend leaving next week on a visit to the Mangataniwha Estate, Wairoa (Ilawke's Bay), which is owned by a local syndicate. The following new members were elected at the meeting of tho Pahiatua A. and P. Association on Tuesday:— Messrs. R. Thorp, G. Bottomlev, H. 11. Miller, M. H. Biggs, D. D. M'Lagan, G. E. Harvey, J. 1\ Goodwin and Gordon Kirk.

The ICanini ratepayers of the Pahiatua County finally decided 011 Tuesday afternoon to anply for an injunction of the Supreme Court prohibiting the Pahiatua County Council from collecting the extra general rate of id. over the riding. A meeting of the committee appointed some time ago by the ratepayers was hold at tho Commercial Hotel. The riding member (Mr. C. Avery) presided. Funds for tho legal action are reported to have been liberally subscribed by the ratepayers of Konini. Messrs. Martin, Atkinson, and Martin, of Wellington, are tho solicitors acting for the Kononi settlers. The action will probably be heard at Wellington at an early date. y EKETAHUNA. A ballot held by tho Eketahuna Building Society 011 Friday night for the sum of 300 was won by Mrs. Polling. Tho Eketahuna telephone exchange will be open 111 future 011 Sundays from 0 a.m. till 9.30 a.m., and from 5 p.m. till 5.30 p.m.

Messrs. Herbert, Tripe, ' Marenzi, Power and Toohill have been elected directors of the Eketahuna Building Society.

The Eketahuna County Council appears to be having some trouble with its workmen. On Saturday the advico of a solicitor had to be invoked to deal with one employee while it was decided to ask another to furnish the council with a statement.

The Finance Committee of the Council has advised that it approves the scheme for a municipal picture show and authorises the Lighting Committee to take the matter in hand. OTAKI, One-of the most successful anniversary celebrations in connection with the local Methodist Sunday School was concluded by tho holding of tho annual social on Wednesday night, when there was a splendid attendanco of children and adults, the church being practically fillod. Tho decorations to the church were pretty and effective. The children sang a number of their anniversary hymns in good style, while other item's were interspersed. The Rev. Cottom, who occupied the chair; expressed , his pleasure at the way the boys and girls had acquitted themselves in councction with the anniversary, and also said how pleased he was at the excellent progress the children had made at school during tho year. Mr. Cottom referred to the trails of Sunday school teachers, saying it. required special training and a great amount of patience to become a good teacher. Parents ought to recognise this, and assist the teachers all thoy could, by sending their children regularly to school, and taking an in their work. Ho trusted the next year's work would bo more successful than the previous ono. Tho balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 ss. 2d. The report referred to tho loss that the 6chool has sustained through' three teachers —Mr. Farmery (late superintendent) and Misses Marshall and Eva Judd —leaving the district. The membership was rather small, but tho attendance had been very good. Six children had sat for the Sunday School Union examination, all securing passes, and three getting first-class certificates and prizes. The behaviour and discipline of tho scholars had been exemplary, having been warmly commended by the chairman of the district on his recent visit.' The report concluded with the statement that the school was commencing tho year with bright prospects.

The Kev. G. F. I'etrie, who was present by invitation, expressed his pleasure at being present at this the first Methodist gathering ho had attended in Otaki, and hoped it would not be tho last. Mr. Petric referred to the excellent work being done at Sunday, schools, but reminded his hearers that the Sunday schools were only an aid to the Christian training of children. There was a tendency nowadays for parents to shirk their whole responsibility in this matter, and leave it entirely to the Sunday schools to teach their children those Christian principles that wore so essential. Mr. Petrie's remarks were heartily applauded. GREYTOWN. A meeting of tho Greytown Oddfellows, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in tho lodge rooms on Wednesday night, when only routine business was transacted. The euchre tournament between the Oddfellows and Foresters was won by tho former by two games. Ono new member was proposed. A shooting match took place at Waikarie 011 Monday last for the rose bowl, valued at seven guineas, presented by Mr. Foreman, of Napier, to be shot for and won outright by members of the Waikario Gun Club who have never won a prize at a competition. Thero was a good entry, but the weather conditions were decidedly adverse 'to good shooting. However, Mr. R. Harwood secured tho trophy, killing eleven out of twelve pigeons, while Mr. D. M'Grath was second, with nine out of twelve.

The weather during the last few dayß has been very wet and cold with snow on the ranges. This is very unusual at this season of the year. Fortunately docking was over before the wet set in.

NEW PLYMOUTH. ' The Tnranaki Hospital Board has decided to institute proceedings for tho recovery of hospital fees which liavo been unpaid for a certain time. It was stated by the chairman that a large percentage of patients paid their fees, but thero are others who secru to bo under the impression that tliey need not pay.

The Valuer-General has now determined the valuations 011 which the levies 011 local bodies for tho erection of the new hospital at New Plymouth are to be based. The contributions to bo paid by the local bodies concerned will be as follow:—Taranaki County Council (rateable value, £2;19!),762), contribution £5661; Egmont County Council (£1,365,838), £3515; Clifton County Council (£965,718), £2-185; New Plymouth Borough Council (£1,538,471), £3959; Waitara Borough Council (£193,520), £-198; Inglewood Borough Council (£148,248), £382. Tho first meeting of the llowly-form-ed New Plymouth School Committee's Association was held 011 Wednesday. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year:—Chairman, Mr. S. G. Smith; vice-chairman, Mr. I. Morrison ; lion.' secretary and treasurer, the Rev. J. A. Kemptliorne; committee, Messrs. Jones, A. C. Dowues, A. E. Smart and G. H. Dolby.
