HAWKES BAY SHOW.
\ RECORD ENTRIES. The committee and the secretary of the ffawke'V Bay Agricultural,' land "Pastoral Society have reason to congratulate themselves unon the splendid response made by exhibitors to the j liberal programmo put forward by tho society for its forthcoming jubilee show, which'will he held at Hastings on Wednesday aiid Thursday next. Over '22',i0 entries have been received, which constitutes a record for the society's shows. One. of the most satisfactory features in cnnncction with the entries is that all the stock sections show nil increase, although it was almost thought that- the limit of expansion had been reached in this direction. That this was not so is abundantly evidenced by a glance at the figures in each of the stock sections in comparison with those of last year. Sheep show an . increase of over 50 oil last year's figures, and catt-lo an increase, of nearly the same number, while the horse section, always a particularly strong one, also shows a decided increase, as does the pig section also. • Outside exhibitors are particularly numerous, and these comprise the leading breeders of almost every description of purebred stock. In the sheep section the Romjieya represent nroro than half the purebred exhibits, a marked contrast to tho society's earlier' shows. In Romney ram hoggets alone there are no fewer than 33 entffies, 'representing nearly twenty exhibitors, nnd the competition in this suction is likql.v to bo unusually keen.- Thi3 is partly due no doubt to the fact that the Wheeler Memorial Challenge. Shield will this year be competed for at this show. The Romney classes will be of more than ifsual interest too this year from the 1 fact .that Mr. Ernest Short, of l'arorangi, will be represented at- this show. The Shorthorn cattle, always a strong section, will .this, year be stronger than ever, whilo Herefords and Polled Angus are also well represented. The'Ayrshirea are expected to'prove tho best lot seen o;i the ground, for three prominent West Coast breeders are each bringing a strong team. Jerseys are also much better represented than last year. The cattle accommodation is likely to be taxed to its fullest extent-, and the display both of beef and cattle should be one of the attractions of the show. In most of tho other sections of the show tho figures of former years are well maintained,'and in the, competitions there has been a very marked advance. The entries for the i open leaping match have reached 30, which is 'jus' twice as many as last year, and these include the j>iek of the North Island jumpers. Applications for space for trade displays and exhibits are more numerous than ever, whilo the side-shows will .be' in great force, it bcino; difficult to-find room on the ground for all of tlioso who applied.
