WOMAN'S WORLD.

[Bl IIIOQEK.]

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Madame Clara Butt's Concert. Tho Town Hall was exceedingly well fillod last ovoning for the third'night of the conoert season of Madame Clara Butt and Mr. Kennerley Rumford, but fow vacant chairs being visible. It was a very enthusiastio audience also, and apparently it could hardly bring itself to part with the famous contralto, who was recalled again and again. Wearing a gown that was a study in tones of geranium rod and pink, sho mado a strikingly effective picture against a background of green lycopodium and palms. Tho upper part of tho corsago was of geranium pink ninon opening over ivory not and lace, and outlined with amantc trimming, and tho beautifully drapod skirt was of red chiffon velvet, caught into folds above the kneo with a largo black velvet star. The colours of tho gown blended beautifully and also toned with the flowers which noro sent up to iicr. The jewels which sho woro wero a diamond necklace, | diamond clasps in her hair, and a largo diamond ornament on. tho bodico of her gown. Among tho audienco wero Mrs. Massoy, Sir Joshua and Lady Williams, the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher and Mrs. Fisher, Mrs. and Miss Cooper l , Mrs. and Miss Beauchamp, Missj Payne, Dr. and Mrs. Martin, Miss Nathan, Mrs. Hall, Miss Logan, Mrs. Christie, Miss M'Lennan, Miss Evans, Mr. and Mrs. L. "Tho Maoris gave mo ono, which reminds mo that Arthur and I wero privileged to attend ' a mourning for a Maori chief,' for hundreds of tho tribes como from all parts to witness such a solemn coremony; but as a rule the I whito raco ara not allowed. It is impossible to say all wo saw and did, for it passed liko a dream.

" 111 Australia wo saw tlio Blue Mountains, tho wonderful parrots, and a little of tilie busli. Olio of the most interesting places wo visited was Whakarewarewa, wliero sulphur is so strong that olio's watch turns colour, and few things,, in fact, can retain their natuiyl hue. In this rather woi.derful Whakarcwarowa one can catch trout in a cold stream, hurl it across to a warm spring, and there it cooks, for in those springs the water is always at a high enough temperature to boil an egg. In fact, tho natives, never boil water, hut uso tho warm streams when they require to cook."
