CHRISTCHURCH DIOCESAN SYNOD.
) • THE BISHOP'S ADDRESS. (By Tolegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, October 14. Tho Anglican Diocesan Synod opened ' this afternoon. Bishop, Julius, in tho course of his address, said that the liis- ! tcry of tlio diocese during tho past year, and especially during the last three 1 months, had been oho of unexampled 1 change. Since tho Synod had last met, ' two of the clergy had died, two had re- ' signed and gone to England, with the 1 purpose of returning, and four had left ' the diocoso. Retirement and resignation had wrought moro change in the Cathedral than'elsewhere. During tho last few months thoy had, lost their j dean and chancellor, four canons, a minor canon, the verger, and tho vcrgt er's boy. After referring to tho im- |. portant measures' submitted to tho General Synod in- Nelson in January last-, the Bishop said:—"Perhaps tho most important piece of legislation by the , General Synod at its recent session was f tlw passing of the new canon of jiatron- ; age. It must bo judged not by theory, 1, but by tho practical experience of its . working during tho next .threo years. 1 During tho last three months of abnormal strain tho new Act has bought me immeasurable help and comfort. It secures tho consideration of the claims f of the clergy ns a whole, which was r hitherto impossible."
