GOLF.
THE N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS.
OPENINC DAY'S PLAY.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
Dunedin, October 13
The New Zealand golf championship meeting commenced to-day. The weather was unfavourable, rain setting in at 7 o'clock and continuing steadily till 11.30, when it went off, but the day remained overcast, and the atmosphere was raw. About four o'clock it came on a light drizzle and mist, this compensating in some degreo those players who had to go out in the heavy rain of tii" morning, as they returned in the afternoon whilo conditions were fair. On the whole, however, it was a good golfing day, for though the greens were heavy there was little wind.
The entries are good for all cventß, most of fcho clubs being represented, and the better-known players of New Zealand being present. Twelve professional players' are taking part, and to-day these had much the best of the play, the amateurs, for the most part, showing poor form.
