CANCER AND COAL

A conclusion reached by Dr. Cbarleß Leedham-Green (surgeon to tjie Queen's Hospital and tho Children's Hospital at Birmingham, and author of numerous papers on surgical subjects), that a distinct rolation exists between the occurrence of 1 cancer and the kind'of fuel used for domestic purposes, has been accepted as conclusive by Sir William Bennett (the eminent surgeon - and ana.tomist), In his presidential address to the members of tho Coal Smoke Abatement Socioty, Sir William said that investigations had shown the incidenco of cancer within the limits of those areas whoro coal is tho staple fuel, wliilo the diseaso was .almost non-existent whero ordinary peat alone was used. Tho only exception discovered was in districts where the peat fuol was hard and black in substance, and exactly liko coal, quite unliko smouldering peat. Sir William Bennett spoko' strongly in favour of gas as a substitute for coal fuel.
