THE LATE BISHOP WESTCOTT.
'A .WARM DISCUSSION,
For some time Dr. Radford, warden of St. Paul's College, Sydney, and Dr. Diggcs ]a Touche have been standing together, presenting a solid front against the Rationalists, but that does not prevent them crossing swords in their own assemblies. At the Brisbano Congress Dr. la Toucho said that, but for tlio gaiters of the bishops, ho would bavo thought ho had stumbled on a Labour party meeting. And Dr. Radford replied that his friend must have been deaf while three of the speeches -wera delivered. But this was a mild xchange to what took place at the meeting of |ho Synod of the Dioceso of Sydney. Dr. la Touche, in criticising tlio Christian Social Union, said that tho founder, Bishop Westcott, did not believe in tho objective atonement of Christ, and eliminated the doctrine of satisfaction—that Christ died to reconcile sinners. Ttlis immediately provoked a passionate reply from Dr. Radford, who championed Bishop Wost-cott. It was, ho said, a libel to Bay that Bishop Westcott denied that tho Cross was tho central fact of tho Gospel, and mado tho Incarnation tho central factor. For some minutes a heated theological controversy waged round tho Bishop, but when Synod adjourned, the learned doctors shook hands, though Dr. Radford obviously resented tho. chargo against his old Bisliog.
