COMMISSION TO INQUIRE.

Delhi, October 9. The Bengal Government is appointing a Commission to inquire into,tho imrest in Bengal.
"Statistics tabled at a meeting of the Council of tho Bengal National Chamber a few months ago show alarming increases in dacoit crime within the last few years, though measures to safeguard tho people who lire in terror in isolated districts appear, oomplains tho Calcutta "Englishman," to nave been consistently ignored, if indeed thought of. In spite of the necessity tho repeated demand for a bigger police force has met with no response whatovor. All that has been done in tho interests of jeopardised trade and the safety of tho people is that tho Secretary of State has sanctioned t'he creation of an extensive River Police Forco to patrol the rivers of tho jute districts. But even this scheme has not been, given effect to. There can bo no doubt thai tho timo has oome when the rural police 6ystem should 1)9 thoroughly overhauled."
