OVER LOCAL SHOPS. The gaily-coloured flag of tho Chinese Republio was flown from the staff of the Chinese Consul for New Zealand (Mr. Kwei Chih) yesterday, in honour of the 1 appointment of Yuan Shih Kai to the exalted position of President. This event was celebrated on Wednesday last, when Mr. and Mrs. Kwei Chih were "at home" to their people a,nd friends. No goneral holiday was held yesterday by tho Chinese residents of the city, who could not absent themselves from the markets owing to tho heavy sales of Island and American fruit, ex Moana. Tho Republican flag consists of a five-barred (horizontal) flag, tho colours, from top to bottom, being rod, yellow, blue, white, • ana black.
