—4 — IS NEW STEAM LINE COMING? For some time past there has been talk of tho Howard-Smith Line of steamors entering the inter-colonial trade. Inquiries have been made locally, with the result that it was ascertained that negotiations had been entered into between certain firms in the Dominion and the shipping company in (juestion. Tho result of these negotiations have not been made publio, but it is understood that an announcement ;will be made shortly. Qertain • arrangements have been made between the Union Company and tho Huddart-Parker Line by which the latter company have been able to place a steamer in the New Zealand coastal trade, as well as an up-to-date passenger steamer in the inter-colonial trade. The Huddart-Parker Company have just established a branch office in Dunedin also, and this points to preparations for competition, The' Howard Smith Line consists of 27 steamers, ranging from six vessels under 1000 tons, to the twin-screw steamer Canberra, 7700 tons. They ore all engaged in the Australian coastal and islands trades.
