NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glencoe.]
Tho Australian Jockoy Club's Spring Meeting will bo concluded at Randwick this afternoon. It is not likely that any Now Zealand horses will ho competing in tho flat races, «nd our solo in-.
terest will, theroforo, bo as to whether Glonmoro can win tno second steoploohaso.
Accompanying To Kahurangi on the Sydney boat yesterday was a trotter from Hawera that is destined to compete in the "Thousand Pounder"- at Melbourne next month. Tiio Stratford Bportsman, Mr. J. R. Stanford, left for Sydney on o health trip last ovoning. It is quito probable that the champion steeplechaser Bercola may go over the water next ,";:fumn.
Mr. C. G. Dalgoty, tlir . ...u-r.ian of the Canterbury Jockey Cluo, lias had a fair measure of success in connection with tho Dunedin Stakes, which he won on Wednesday for the second year in Eucoossion. Warstep, who won a year ago, and Marsa, who was successful on Wednesday, ore both by Martian. Marso is a sister to Martyr©, who was sold at a big price, and went to Australia, where sho broke down without reproducing in publio her best New Zealand form. Botanist, who finished second to Marsa, is a brother to Heatherbrao and Briar Patch, by Treadmill —Bonnie Brao,. whilo Oortos, who filled third place, is by Vasco —lima, the dam of Obsonov
By winning tho Gimcraok Stakes in 64}seo. at the Australian Jockoy Club's meeting on Wednesday, Woorak established o fresh time record for the race, tho previous best being Ventura's 54J sec. two yeais ago, when, however, tho winner carried a 101b. penalty for her success in the Breeders' Plate. Woorak's siro, Traquair, was an Englishbred horso, who died after three seasons at tho stud in Australia. During that time, however, he left a pumber of exceptionally fast performers. Madam, the dam of Woorak, is a halfsister to the Melbourne Cup winner, Marvolio, being by Pilgrim's Progress —Madcap, by Robinson Crusoe. Carlita, who finished second to Woorak, was one of tho cheap lots at tho Sydney yoarling sales last Easter, when she was disposed of for 125 guineas. She was bred by Mr. J. B. Reid, and at the disposal of tho Elderslie stud at tho beginning of last year Bhe was sold, with hor dam, to Messrs. Rouse Brothers, of Now South Wales, for 175 guineas. She is by Oharlemagno 11., whoso stock all Bhow paoo, her dam, Couronne, being by Gipsy Grand—Coronal, a sister to Gold Medallist. Aoma, who raced in tho colours of Mr. H. Whitney, was a half-sister to Oarlita.
Southern papers state that Rinaldo is an unlikely starter for the Now Zealand Cup. Despite this he has many supporters in these parts who think thai the bay teolt has only to be produced to win.
Jcannot, Martel, Rinaldo, and Ogier, three-year-olds in M. Hobos's Riccarton stables,_ lmvo all earned winning brackets tliis season.
Chudic, winner of the Taioma Haak raco at Wingatui, is a full brother to Sveaborg, and is trained by E. Griffen at Ashmirton. 'Ho has had a reputation for somo time, and ho acted up to it in his first essay in publio.
Tho Spring Meeting of the' Dunedin Jockey Club will be brought to a conclusion at Wingatui to-day. Coronetted has not been pnid up for in the Hurdles, but liis stable has Margo ongaged, and tho distance should suit the grey mare well. The ancient Jolly Filar seems to, have taken a new lease of life. Ho led till the last fence in the Hurdles, tho distanoo being one mile and three-quarters.^
In tho Dunedin Jockey Club's Ranfurly Handicap (one mile), Specialform (7st. 91b), will be racing over a distance that should suit her bettor than the sprints which she has been engaged in lately. On tho one • hand_ she will not bo required to begin so quickly and, on the other, her finishing powers are of tho best. On "her form at Oamaru in tho autumn, sho must be considered well handicapped. Ladrone (Bst.) runs a very good mile, and he should give a good account of himself. This is just about as far as the Sir Laddo gelding likes to go.
Two D imcdin-trainod two-year-olds —Silvia and Honoj Girl—will measure strides with Botanist and Cortes in the Dominion Handicap at Wingatui. The last two should provide ail interesting raco. Cortes was a triflo unlucky at the barrier in Wednesday's race.
With only 6st. 91b. on her back Formnal will sot a very fast pace in tho Shorts Handicap (six furlongs) at Wingatui, and she, may be tho means of defeating Robert 8011, who has been raised 161b. for his first day's succes. Kostroma, who was runner-up on Wednesday. meets him on 91b. better tormß, and will again be ridden by W. Bell. Ohudic has gone up to Bst. 81b. in tho Dunedin Jockey Club's Kaikorai Handicap. This is a rise of 151b'., while tlio distance ia a furlong further. Probably ho will be a better norco for the race on tlho opening day x and it must bo added that the opposition are anything but a good lot.
Gun flash (Bst. 91b.) and Glen owl (9st. 81b.) may bo the favourite selections in the Telegraph Welter Handicap at Wingatui. Doth aro good under welter weights, and the former generally runs well on t3io Becond day of a meeting.
