THE OPENING DAY. (By Telegraph—Prwjs Aroociation.) Duncdfn, October 8. Tharo was a fairly good attendance for the opening day of tlio D.J.C. Spring Meeting. Tho weather was glorious. Tho sum of £11,856 was jjut through tho machine, compared with £11,591 for the corresponding day last year. Tho results are: — SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP, of I.ls'sovs. Ono milo and three-quarters. —1 Mr. Studholme's ch g. Coronotted, by Coronot —Rau llau, aged, 12st. (jib. (L. 5 Black and Brown, 9st. Redwing and Jolly Friar took lip the running, the latter showing tlio way to tho first fcncc. Before reaching tho mile post, Margo pulled up, through a stirrup leather breaking. Jolly Friar increased his lead going along tho back, being a dozen lengths in lront of Coy, with Black and Brown closo up third, ami Redwing next. Coronetted was up with Jolly l«'riar at the last fence, and in tho run home won comfortably by a couplo of lengths. Jolly l'rinr beat Coy by a length. Rcdwing_ was six lengths away. Aphaca was first to break tho line, and led Tannhauser to the first turn, tho field being "bunched. Racing to the first post, Ladrone and Aphaea were Tunning in front from Tannhauser, llock Ferry, and Daringdale bringing up* tho rear. A close running field entered the back stretch, Ladrono and Aphaea being still in front, and Rock Ferry, Tannhauser, St. Aidan, and The Cornet closo up. Tho order was unchanged running past tho four-furlong post, except that Daringdale commenced to improve his position. Going up tho rise Ladrone drew out from Aphaca, and The Comet moved up, Rock Ferry dropping back a little. Ladrono entered the straight a length in front of Aphaea, Tho Cornet lying third. From. inside the distance. a good race homo ensued, and Tannhauser won by a good head from Ladrone, Daringdale being a short neck away third. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, October 8. A well-known trainer states that the last seven furlongs of the race for tlie Clibbom Stakes (won by Soltano) was cut out in lmin. 25sec. Anna parlovua promises to start one of the hottest favourites on record for tho Caulficld Cup. The two-year-old racehorse Kincher was stolen from Norman Scobie's stable. (Rec. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Featherston, October 8. Mr. J. O'Halloran, caretaker of the Napier Park Racecourse, has been appointed starter to tho Wairarapa Racing Club. At a meeting of tho stewards of tlie club to-day a request from the Wairarapa Automobile Association to hold motor-cycle sports at tlie racecourse or. December 27 was refused, as being likely to interfere with the arrangements for the race meeting on January 1 and 2. The association wero asked to select another date. Tho stakes for tho summer meeting are £2225 —Wairarapa Cup £400 and Taulierenikau Handicap £250.
