' Fine weather prevailed for tho Australian Jockoy Club's Spring meeting, and there was a good attendance at Randwick for an off day. Tho surprise, of tho day was tho running of Soltano and Beragoon ill tho Craven Plate. Duke Footo was a liot favourite, but it wns expected that tho three-year-olds wqiild givo tho champion- a good race. Expectations wero not realised, for Soltano, who was third favourite, mado the pace for six furlongs, and was then licadcd by Duko Footo. Thereafter the fjoult coit dropped back. Beragoon, who was hard-ridden nearly all tho way, got fourth, without ever being dangerous. Tho raco was obviously over as soon as Duko Foote took tho lead, His victory was loudly cheered this time. Tho Gimcrack Stakes introduced a fast colt, named Woorak, who was not started in tho Breeders' Plate. Ho gave nothing clso a chance'., Eugcny, who carried' 101b. penalty for his victory in the Breeders' Plato, was among tho starters, but failed to gain a place.. Ho was then out among tho field aftor going three furlongs, but ho fell at tho ond of a milo. Wimmera was with this leaders to the last furlong, and then finished fifth. Beacon finished "nowhere." Duko Foote, Gigandra, and Aurifer were first off, but Soltano took tho lead at the nine furlongs post, and passed tho mile post three lengths ahead of Gigandra and Duke Footo, with Aurifer and Beragoon next. Soltano'led along tho back, where Beragoon was already being hard ridden. Duko Foote reduced Soltano's load to a length at tho fivefurlongs post, and took the lead at tho half-milo. Coming into the straight the order was: DukeFooto, Gigandra, and Cidor. Posinatus then made'a surprisingly good run, but Duko Loote won easily by two lengths, with a length between secdnd and third. Midnight Sun led past the stand from Alured, Limelight, and Prince Flavus. Along tho back tho leaders wero: Limelight, Prince Flavus, Alured, Midnight Sun, arid Sir Vive. There was littlo alteration until tho straight, except that Allingamito moved up on the outside. Alured coining on well at that stage won by four lengths. Three-quarters of a length separated second and third. Midnight Sun and Allingamito wero tho next to finish. Time, 2min. 34?, sec. (Rcc. October 8, 10.30 p.m.) Sydney, October s. Woorak's time was 54Jsec. in the Gimcrack Stakes—a sccond faster than Merriment's long-established record.
