OFFICERS IN TRAINING.
' THE OBLIGATION TO SERVE. Tho Minister of Defence was* asked fcy Mr. Okey in the House of Representatives yesterday whether, in sending a' colonial officer Home for military training, and stipulation was made that the tofficor should servo in tho Dominion Forces for a stated tern of years, or whether an officer was at liberty to re--sign his office immediately after the ■ had been to the expense of his 'Home training. . Tho Hon. Jas. Allen replied: "Defence Regulation 121 provides as follows— /'Officers of the New Zealand Staff Corps ■and Royal Now Zealand Artillery sent •put of the Dominion for training at the expense of tho Government will sign an giving an undertaking that (they will not resign their commissions \ior a period of five years after their return to New Zealand.' This was ga-jy-otted, and came into fore© on May 5, >1911. Four of the officers sent Home iprior to this date signed such an agreement. From May 5, 1911, being dato ■of the gazotting of the regulations, agreements have been signed by four of tho officors now serving abroad, and jforms of agreement havo been sent for 'signaturo to five other officers undergoing training in Great Britain and India." ' . Captain R. J.. S. Seddom, who returned to the Dominion six weeks ago after undergoing a course of training at Homo anil was appointed area officer at Paoroa, has resigned, and: his resignation has been accepted by the Minister of Defenco. .
A Maori not far from Waverley wanted to go to the races at Wanganui last week, but did not have sufficient funds.
