RECENT PROMOTIONS. THE HOUSINC OF THE AIRSHIP. The general orders promulgated by tho General Officer Commanding tho Defence Forces mention the following appointments and promotions:—Captains W. H. Meddings, C. W. Molvill, C.' E. Andrews, and J. T. Bosvrortli, and Lieutenants B. S. Hay and J. R. Hendefson, of the Stall Corps, havo qualified by examination for promotion. On tho Permanent/Staff C. Quartley has b6en appointed sergeant-instructor, and has been posted to Christchurch; Sergeant-Instructor A. G. Barlow, J. P. Routledge, and S. Mellows have been promoted to staff sergeant-majors; and fcergeant-Instructors A. Carter,' J. B. Packman, and W. Eastbury havo been . confirmed in their appointments. In tho -Territorial Force, Captains R. R. Bowie, Bth (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles, is promoted major; Lieutenants N. S. Falla and H. G. Daltry,' Fiold Artillery, are promoted captains; Second Lieutenants A: J. Cliryfltall, R. Richards, and V. Rigers, Field Artillery, are promoted lieutenants; Lioutenant-Colonel R. W. M'Villy, Raili ■ way Battalions, StafE Officer to the Director of Railway Transport, is promoted to be Assistant Director of Railway •Transport;' Captain Percy St, John Keenan, Adjutant North Island Battalian, to bo Staff Officer to tho Director of Railway Transport; C. P. Ryan to be captain North Island Battalion 'Engineers; |H. C. Nelson and R. 0. Brydon to be second lieutenants North Island Battalion Engineers; Donald Robson to be second lieutenant Coast Defonce Detachment' Canterbury Regi- \ Inent; Lieutenant J. Aeneas Cameron to be captain, Wellington West Coast 'Regiment, and transferred to the Reserve ■of Officers; Second Lieutenant !F. Whitcombe to bo lieutenant, Wellington West Coast Regiment; Captain : T. H. Ringland to bo major, Wellington East Coast Regiment; Second Lieutenants J. S. Mackay and B. R. Lankshear to bo lieutenants; Second Lieutenants F. W. Parker, W. C. Harley, H. Saunders, and D. A. Dion to bo lieutenants, Nelson Regiment; Ernest Boxer to bo lieutenant, attached to No. 8 ■Mounted Field Ambulance. On the Motor Reserve of Officers the following ' appointments are notified: — Major Arthur de Bathe Brandon and Captain John Mounsey (Field Artillery) to bo majors; Otto Jerusalem, C. G. Sherwood, A. E. Whyte, *D. S. Hing- / Eton, G. Fernandos, F. H.Stoclcwell; H. H. Ostler, G. H. Bucke'ridge, and G. N. Pharazyn to be lieutenants, all Wellington Section; and H. Wright to bo lieutenant; Otago Section. Colonel E. S. Heard, Acting-Comman-dant of the Forces, left for Auckland , yesterday, and was ' accompanied by Captain festcourt, Acting-military Secretary. He will afterwards go on to Hamilton to make arrangements for the staff'tour which is to be held in the neighbourhood of Hamilton and Cambridge in January nest. Tho staff tour ; is for officers of the staff and senior Territorial officers. -Last year it was Iheld .near Terauka, in the Canterbury district. _ ' A shed' of galvanised iron has been erected by the Defence Stores carpenter in tlie yard at tho rear of tho Buckle Street stores office, and is almost ready for the housing of the monoplane Britannia, wlricli arrived from Home on the Athonio. Tho Defence Department expect to take delivery, of the machine during the next few days. . At the first annual meeting of the Defence Staff Shooting Club the officers for the year were- elccted as follow Captain, Captain H. M. W. Richardson; vice-captain, Lieut. E. P. Coady; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. 11. S. Lucas: assistant secretary, Quartormaster-oergoant Sharp; member of committee, Bandmaster H. M'Convish. Tho season was opened last Saturday; by a very successful shoot against the officers of the 6th Infantry Regiment, the Defence Olub winning by 46 points. Arrangements for the.shoot- . ing off for trophies kindly donated this season will bo made' by the committee. On Saturday next a teams' match will be fired. Yesterday members of D Company, *6th Regiment (old' Civil Service Rifles) •wont to Trentham for a whole-day parade, and were put througli the first .practices- of tho musketry courso; The parade was under the command, of Captain Richardson, Adjutant of the •Regiment. • ' Officers in command of the various military districts will meet the ComInandant and headquarters staff in confereneo at Wellington .on November 3 and 4 to arrange dotails of the Divisional camps to be held during March and April of next year. The commanding officers ' are: —Colonel •E. W. C. Chaytor (Wellington). Colonel R.. Logan (Auckland), Colonel V. S. Smyth (Canterbury), and Colonel A. Bauchop .(Otago). - ' ' 1 Between sixty and seventy camp ■ cooks will go into camp at Trentham for ' a, fortnight's training in tho work of j camp-cooking. The camp will bo under ' the charge of Major H. H. Browne, as-'sistaht-quartermaster-senoral, and members will como from all districts of Now ] Zealand. A number of fully trained i camp cooks will, instruct the . recruits j in the use of the Roberts cooker and j -lAldershot ovens.
