Delegations of all the Protestant Missionary Societies tendered their congratulations at tlio Wesloyan Missionary Socioty's Centenary celebrations at the Central Hall at Westminster. At tlio centenary celebrations of tlio Methodist Missionary Society, tlio Rev. Dr. G. Brown, of tlio Australian. Lawry graphically, described tlio Christianisation .of tho Maoris. Reports from all parts of tho world announced tho vigorous spread of Moth-, odism. Lord Stamfordham (private secretary to tho King) conveyed ilis Majesty's cognition of tho religious and philanthropic work so universally extended by tlio Mothodi&t Missionary Society _ iu promoting the noble aims of Christianity. Ho offered his hearty congratulations on tho high results achioved in tho hundred years of its ministry. On October G, 1813, the first publio meeting in the interest of Methodist foreign mission was held in old St. Peter's . Chapel, Leeds, and this date is counted the birthday o£ the society, though, aa a matter of fact, Wesleyan foreign missions had )xcn started at nn earlier period. Within the short period of 21 years five great missionary societies have started. Each of tho five has to-day a world-wide influence, oven though all of them have not yet completed their hundred years. . Through tho zeal of William Carey, tho shoemaker, tho Baptist Missionary Society was commenced in 1792; tho "London Missionary Society, now associated wrfti the in 1795; the Church Missionary Society in 1799; tho British and Foreign Biblo Society—a catholic-minded missionary organisation and tho handmaid of tho others-in 1804; and tho Wesleyan Missionary Society in' 1813.
