AMBUSHED AND SHOT.
INQUEST ON A CONVICT. By ToloETaph—Press Association—Copyright London, October 7. At the inquest regarding the death of Jones, an escaped convict, who was ambushed and shot by three lads a few days ago, Bateman, an Oxford undergraduate, gave evidence that he fired at Jones out of fear, believing that the convict had a revolver. As he was incapablo of giving aid, he left the wounded man ijntil his (Bateman's) father camo, and found Jones dead. A verdict of manslaughter against Bateman was returned. Jones, who was much cmnciated after five days' privation, attacked the lads with a pair of shears, refusing to isnrro ruler. Ho was siiot in the less, and died twenty minutes later.
