BANKS OF FOG.
STEAMERS GROPE THEIR WAY. (By IWeirrajli.—Prtoa Association.) Chrlstchurch, October 8. Th'ero was thick weather along tho icoast 'this morning, and tho fog signals at Godle.y Head wcro sounding their warning blasts for sovcral hours. Tlio iViotoria, which arrived at Lyttelton this morning, reported having passed through sovcral bank's of fog on her trip from Dunediu. Tlio ferry steamer .Mararoa had a similar experience coming from Wellington, the fog being very thick when sho waa off Cheviot. However, sho made good time, and as the fog lifted when shtf was outside tlio Heads, Lyttelton was reachcd only half ait hour later than usual. The Wcstralia, which brought tho mails from the north, having taken hor departure from Wellington somo two hours and a half before tho Mararoa, was not so fortunate as that, vessel, and was about half an hour behind her when arriving in port. Tlio mails for tho south, however, were dispatched as usual by tho second espress. ■
