YOUTH CRAGO AGAIN.
ATTEMPT TO BREAK OUT OF GAOL. (By Teleirrapli.—Pros Association.) Auckland, October 8. • On Saturday afternoon a clover at« tempt was mjidc to cscapo from the Mount Eden Gaol by Robin Jasper Crago, aged 17, who early this year achioved notoriety in a sensational motor-car shooting case at Takapuna. For this, in May last, he was sentenced to ten years' .reformative detention oil two charges of attempted murder. In July last ho made several arrangements intended to be used' for the purposo of escape from gaol. Tho latest exploit carried tho attempt to escapo to a further stage than his provious effort. Ho timed the attempt between three and four o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, when prisoners wore being passed into the enclosed portion of tho exorciso yards for "smoko." Crago mingled with tho others, and so stepped into part of tho yard which was used for stone-dressing, and managed to liido behind n pilo of dressed stone. Twenty minutes aro allowed for "smok'o," and ivhen tho smokers woro - filed back to tho exorciso yard Crago caiuo out from his hiding alid managed to break open a tool box iu tho stoneiressing yard. Ho got a rope, a pieco of chain, and a crowbar, and, with the crowbar, ho prised off from the stonedressing screen a three feet length of rounded iron about a quarter of an inch thick. This ho bent into tho form of a large hook, and, by means of tho chain, lie attached tho hook to a length or rope. By crawling along in tho lee of tho buildings, ho managed to get through a gap and to tho outer wall without being sighted by the sentry then on duty. | Then ho' endeavoured to throw the hook on his rope so that it would catch tile top of tho wall, but ho was sighted by the sentry, and was also seen by a warder. He was quickly taken in charge agaui, offering no resistance. Crago was brought before Mr. F. \ . Frazer, S.M., this morning, charged with an aggravated breach of tho prison regulations, lie admitted tlio offenco, stating that ho had no excuse to offer, and was sentenced to be put on bread and water rations for seven days.
