ORGAN RECITAL
The City Organist (Mr. Page) gave an organ recital in tho Town Hall last evening, his selection of numbers coverihg a fsw of tho older English school of composers. In these there is the great charm, of variety, fragments of beautiful melody, and, above all, that purity of style which is characteristic of the older composers. Mr. Page is making a laudable effort to stir interest in this direction. The opening number, "Voluntary in D Minor" (William Russell) is a remarkably fine work, and its difficult fugue, clever modulation, and imposing climax were treated skilfully and characteristically. Tho next item disclosed Mr. Pago in totally different vein, and hero liis- great artistry was again apparent. The number was one of Guilmant's set of organ pieces, ,'Pricre and Berceuse." "Fantasia in G Major" (Bach) followed. This is considered 0110 of the finest fantasiaß which Bach has composed for the organ, and its interpretation last night was a most creditablo one. Three old English compositions were then given, and their rare beauty was fully revealed. The numbers wero: "Romance" (Wheelman), "Marcho Triumphale" (Callaerts), and "Introduction and Allegro" (John Keeblo). Tho programme concluded with two picces of E. d'Evry, the gifted organist of Brompton Oratory, London, 'fliese numbers, "Meditation and Finalo," aro of exquisite sweetness. The programmo was furtbor embellished by two encore it-ems, which tho audience, though few in numbers, insisted on having.
