Johnston, whilo travelling from Wellington by train on Wednesday, was robbed of £125. including a £50 note, of which ho know the number, and payment was stopped by tho National Bank. On Thursday a man presented tho missing £50 noto at tho bank. The easliior consulted tho manager, who instructed tho cashier to get change, and meanwhile asked tho mail presenting the noto to tako a soat in tho office. "Very woll," replied tho mail, "my wifo is outside. I'll just bring her in." .Ho left, tho bank noto behind him, and lias not been seen since. CRITICISM. ON NEW ARBITRATION BILL. . Auckland, October 7. Tho Arbitration Act Amendment Bill is meeting with widespread opposition from trades unions in Auckland. Tho Waterside Workers' Union has written; to Mr. Myers, M.P., asking him, on behalf of 1100 members of that body, to convoy to Parliament their conviction that tho Bill as tho most harsh and re'actionary measure devised in any civilised country outside Russia for many years, and expressing tho opinion that this is an attempt to revert to tho coercive methods in .vogue against tho workers in medieval times and under tho Roman empire,, and emanated iron 1 tho organised employers of this country and their officials'. _ Tho opinion is expressed that "complete humiliation of organised Labour in Now Zealand is aimed at by, tho promoters. This iniquity will bo defeated in practice, audi tho Bill, if passod, must inevitably result in chaos." MUNICIPAL PICTURES. REGENT EMBARGO AT FOXTON.. ; Fox ton, October 7. Tho Mayor of Foxtail interviewed tho Minister at Wellington yesterday in reference to inserting a clan so in tho amending Municipal Corporations Act, empowering municipalities! to provido ana control picture entertainments. The r Minister and Statutes Revision Committee havo consented to such a clausa' being inserted. On a writ of. injunction to restrain the Foxton Coumoil from showing moving pictures,' the Chief Justice recently ruled that no provision was mado yi tho Act. empowering corporations to jncludto moving pictures under their , jurisdiction. If Parliament adopts tho clause, picture ontertainmonls will, bo i municipally controlled in many centres; RAILWAY MANACER. FIRST VISIT TO SOUTH ISLAND, Chrlstchurch, October 7. Mr. E. H. Hiley, General Managef of New Zealand Railways, and Mr. T. Ronayno, General Manager, arrived in, Christchurch to-day on a preliminary and flying inspection of tho South Island railways. _ During the morning ■ both paid a visit to Lyttelton. Mr.' Hiley said that, following tho rule; which ho had laid down in other parts of tho Dominion when approached for' information, ho 'had nothing to communicate for publication. Replying to a; question Mr. Hiley said that it waa not his intention on' his present visit, to tho South Island to inspect all tho' branch linos.' Ho was only .having run through. He continues his jour-j ney south on Thursday.
