COST OF THE BALKAN WARS.
£100,000,000 SPENT BY THE BEL- ' LIGERENTS. ' The "Corrcspondanco d'Orient" estimates that tho two Balkan campaigns have. cost the belligerents 110 less a sum than £100,000,000. The "Statist" lias already arrived at a total of £72,000,000 for Turkey and tho Allies, but this did not include Rumania. Tho "Daily News" states, that M. Philouze, a French financial expert, in the course of an investigation, went through tho papers of tho Tiirkish General StafE with tho lato Malimud Shefket Pasha, and estimated the expenditure for Turkey to July 1 at £36,000,000, not including the requisitions in Rumelia at tho beginning of the first campaign. As for the Allies, Greece alone has officially communicated her military outlay, which amounts to about £10,500,000, including £1,600,000 on the war with Bulgaria. An exact estimate as regards Servia and Bulgaria is impossible, but Soryia, says M. Philouze, was very economical in her mobilisation and campaigns, and her total outlay may be set down at £14,000,000, while that of Bulgaria is probably £20,000,000. Rumania spent £&,000,000 on preparing for war, and her mobilisation and campaign cost her £6,000,000 —that is, £14,000,000 in all. In addition to this total of £100,000,000, M. Philouze adds that a further sum of £80,000,000 must bo reckoned for bringing the armaments up to date. This means that the Western Powers, France especially, - will shortly be aske.d for loans amounting to something like £160,000,000: and tho question arises—can the Balkan States and' Turkey bear such .i, burden ?
