N.Z. HON. TERRITORIALS.
NOTICED AT HOME. The following appears in the current issue of the "Military Mail," tho journal 'of the Regular and Territorial Foroes and the National Reserve:— "A very useful body exists in New Zealand termed the Honorary Terri-'i torials, and is composed of men' and' women, who, while unable through age, or other disabilities to take an activo part with the Territorials which, by tho way, close at 25 years of ago, pledge themselves to do all they can to assist, The Honorary Territorials are composed of all classes. Each member is attached to whatever regiment, company, squadron, or battery he or she chooses, and they -do all they can to assist that special unit, either by watching the parades, assisting in camp, subscribing to send teams to tournaments, giving prizes, in fact, in any way which seems best to thorn. Quite recently a number of these Honorary Territorials, after talking over the matter, decided to offer prizes to the Territorials for essays on the history of the British regiments to which they are allied. They were at once, faced with the fact that tho hooks from which such histories could be obtained aro not in this Dominion, so for a time the idea had to be dropped. But tho idea has not been abandoned, and is to be taken up again so soon as the necessary literature can be obtained and circulated. , '
The General Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association held a special meeting on Saturday, when the schedule for tho February show was revised and adopted. It was decided to. delete the ladios' jumping competition from the programme, and to raise tho prize-money in tho championship jump from £45 to £60. It was also decided to delpt-e all pig classes, with the' exception of fat pigs and porkers. The trials have been made on the Halm-atad-Nassjo railway, Norway, with a locomotivo fired with peat powder instead of coal. The experiments has so far been very successful, and in using peat powder a further advontago was obtained m that the time taken for the locomotive to get tip steam has now. been reduced from about three hours to half an hour.
