i ' ■-' • RACING AT RANDWICK. BERAGOON'S DERBY. SOLTANO FINISHES LAST. HURDLES WON BY. WIMMERA. ' By Telegraph-Press Association—Copyright (Reo. October 5, 6.6 p.m.) . Sydney, October 4. At Randwiok to-day, the Australian 'Jockey Club's Spring Meeting wa3 commenced. Tho weather kept fino throughout the aftqrnqon, but, there was a thundorstorp'.'after'the last race. Tho track was -in excellonj order. The Governor-General. (Lord Denman) was present with' Lady Denman, and the attendance tiumbofed sixty . thousand people. . • ' New Zealand Eooured one win by Wimmera. The other New Zealauders who performed well were Banksia and Etnporador. ' Banksia was either fir?t or second throughout, but found Challenge Crosse too strong'a finisher. Emperador was prominent throughout the Spring Stakes. Danaus, who beat him for second place; ran a grand race. _The performance of Soltano; was verp disappointing. Apparently something happened to hfm. as, after going about a milo, lie fell (jack last from second place. Beragoon, under pressure, finished straight, and showed -himself a game colt. Beau Soult failed to stay, but Ulva's Isle ran surprisingly well, and should bo heard 1 of in- the near future. After the race, Lady Denman placed the blue riband round Beragoon's neck. : Owing to the sovere race oxperiencod, the Derby owner scratched Beragoon: for the Metropolitan Handieap. . . • The Epsom-Handicap field was a record—fiivo above tho 1900 fiold, which was the previous best. Aleconner was a surprise packet. Ho had not been doing well in his work lately, and was absent from the tracks for about a week. The resentment felt at the late scratching of Duke Foote for the Metropolitan Handicap, expressed itself-""in"' most pronounced fashion as soon as the champion came out to :do his preliminary for the Spring Stakes'. Patronß' on the flat began hooting loudly, and after the-race the hooting' was taken up in the paddock. When tho owner camo out and patted--the Duke's neck, tho storm became : wilder than ever. As the horse washed away the jeering still continued. It was the worst demonstration over seen a£; Randwick in. similar circumstances. - ; Cadonia wa? scratched, for tho Metropolitan Handicap, f-becauso Abbcite, the other "leg" of, : tne stable double, failed in tho Epsom Cadonia will not be started. ih"anpthe'r handicap until -tho Melbourr.o Clip. , . .' ; Details of, tho- day's racing are as follow:— ■: , , .
