OPENING DAY & RESULTS. SCOREB & NOTES. Tho Wellington rifle shooting season was opened on Saturday afternoon last under tho most favourablo conditions. Tho day was almost perfect for shooting, tho light being very olear, while tho wind, although strong at times, was fairly steady, and never really puzzling. About 70 riflemen made tho joumoy to Trentham, and Bpcnt a really enjoyable afternoon. Tho standard of shooting was high, considering .that the riflemen were handling their weapons for tho first time sinco last summer, an especially pleasing featuro being the good showing made by new shots. Tho first shot was fired by President H. Marshall, of tho Karori Club, and resulted in a bull's eye. This wellknown shot was in excellent form, and put together the fino scoro of 94 out of a possible 100 at 300 and 500 yards. His score of 49 at the longer range was especially meritorious. His inner was scored with his second shot, right on tho edge of tho bull. Another 94 was compiled by Rifleman Croxton, also of tho Karori Club. Ho made 48 at 300 yds., tho best score for the range. At 600 yds. ho oommenced with four inners, but found tho bull with each of his sis. remaining shots. Another wellknown Trentham shot who made a good scoro was Rifleman Ching, of Karori, who put on 92. Tho Highland Rifle Club also fired a match at 300 and 600 yards—seven shots at each. At 600 yards, Riflemen Henderson, Martin, and Spencer each got 33. The best totals wore 64, by Henderson and Martin. An interesting seven-shot match was fired between tho Staff Riflo Club and the officers of tho Fifth (Wellington) Infantry Regiment, the ranges being 300 and 500 yards. The Staff won by a good margin. Tile best score was that of Rifleman Ching, 65. Details of tho various matcheß follow :— ' , KARORI CLUB. As a preliminary to tho official opening of the season, which is to take Elace on Saturday noxt, the Karori -lub fired a match between teams picked by tho president and tho assistantBecrotary respectively. A feature of the match was tho good scoring by tlio newly-enrolled members. The ammunition prize, presented by Rifleman F. W. Ching, tor tho highest scoro in tho match, was won by President H.
