THE OPENING OF THE SEASON. As no fewer tlian seven clubs aro opening their grcons for tho season today, it may bo assumed that the season practically begins from tliis afternoon. Unfortunately tlio weather did not oroniino vory favourably jestoiuj-jr.
Tho cold southerly wind whloh blow throughout the day reminded on© of the winter which wo havo Just emerged from, and the drizzling rain which fell early in tho morning was also disquiets wg, though not unwelcomo to the grconkoopers. The spring has, bo far, been an unusually dry ono, and, as a result, the turf is not nearly so yielding to the foot as it generally is at this Btage of the season. Tho clubs which nro to throw their greens open for play today arc: Wellington, Newtown. Hataitai, Victoria, Lyall Bay, Kelburno, and Jolm6onville. Tho greens will be opened by the respective presidents promptly at 2.30 p.m., at which time members and visitors (who intend to play) must b9 ready. Ladies are invited to all tho opening ceremonies. On Saturday next the Thorndon, Petone, and Hutt Clubs will declare their greens open for play, and on Saturday, October 28, tho To Hiwi Club (Island Bay) will follow suit.
