A GELIGNITE EXPLOSION.
MAN CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (R-ec. October 1, 7.40 p.m.) Sydney, October 1. Walter Merrifield, who, on August 9 was committed for trial at Newcastle on a charge of murdering his partner, Clarence Kefford, by causing an explosion of gelignite in a room where Hefford was sleeping, has been found guilty of manslaughter. The jury added a strong recommendation for mercy on tho ground of the good character of. tho prisoner. A statement mado by Merrifield showed that Kefford opposed tho proposal either to admit a third partner to their market garden or to dissolve partnership. Merrifield fired the explosive with •the object of frightening Kefford, and convincing him that ho was in earnest. Ho did not think he would wreck tho room.
