Ho savs that while the Americans deserved their success in the Davis Cup, the defeat of the Australians was chiefly due to the bad courts, which wero very soft f.nd' heavy. The general opinion is that tlie fixtures are made too early in the season. Tho Australians, he said, had to play with! spikes in their sboes, and it was next to impossible, to play the passing game on whicb they so much relied, while the soft turf, favoured the volleying so characteristic of tho Americans' plav. Jones's illness was also a niece of bad luck. Rice is confident tliat tho Australians would have brought back the cup if Brookes had been, a member of the team.
