Geddis. editor and,managing director of the "New Zealand Tillies," left for Wellington by tlio mail train to-day. Prior'to his departure he was served -with a writ as 0110 of the owners of tlio Auckland "Observer," charging him on the information of tlio Attorney-General with contempt of Court in connection with tlio publication of certain cartoons. The writ ia similar to tlio one served upon William Blomiield, of Auckland. Tlio writs issued in the cases aro returnable on October 8, but no date has yet been fixed for tlio. hearing of the caea.
WHAT PROVES SALE? POINT IN SLY GROG CASE.' . Croymouth, September 30. In tlio appeal in tlio Wauta and Big River sly grog-selling cases, iii which the Magistrate (Mr. Hewitt) held that the fact that there was on the premises more liquor than was reasonably required for the persons residing therein was primp facid cvidonco of sale, the appeal- was dismissed by Mr. Justice Chapman. The appellants relied principally on the fact that there was no ovidence of salo, and that no particular date was mentioned, the information alleging between two dates within three months of the laying of the information.
YELLOW FLAG t HOME STEAMER QUARANTINED. Auokland, September 30. Three men oil tlio Tysor steamer Whakarua developed a suspicious rash, and the health officer decided to treat them as suspects. Ho ordered tlio vessel into quarantine for 48 hours at Motuihi Island, where she will undergo general disinfection. It is considered that, at the end of 48 hours, tho nature of tho rash can bo definitely diagnosed.
