HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

There was a largo attendance at St. James's Hall, Lower Hutt, last evening to say farewell to Mr. Gardner, who has been assistant to the Rev. Joshua Jones for about two years, but is resigning to go to St. Peter's, Wellington. The Rev. Mr. Jones, in asking Mr. Gardner on behalf of the congregation to accept a present (a substantial cheque), referred to the good feeling that had existed between Mr. Gardner and himself. Other speeches of a complimentary nature were also made. During the evening items were given by Mrs. Leigliton, Miss Harte, and Messrs. House and Tosswille. Major Bevan presented shooting trophies last evening at the. Pet-one Drill Hall after a parade by territorials. Following is the list;—A Class, company championship (Wilford Cup and gold medal), Corp. Pcttett; Mr. A. Cob's trophy, Corp. Rodwell; Hallenstein Bros.' trophy, Corp. Pattinson; Capitain Hollis's trophy, Corp. Stewart; Captain Archibald's trophy, SergeantMajor Finlay. B Class, Captain Price's trophy, Gunner R. Lee; Mr. Piatt's trophy, Corp. Martin. O Class, Geraldine trophy (Mr. W. Cloust'pn's), Gunner Webley; Mr. Piatt's trophy, Gunner Bale.
