DEATH OF THE LAST OF THEM.
(By Talegr"i'h—Prcos Association.) Rotorua, September 30. 'A' well-known figure' in tho Maori world passed away at Ohinemutu last night in the person of Anaha Matao, the last of the' old tohungas and the last of tho old carvers. '
Anaha, who was born. at Tokoutu Pa. Okataina, over 90 years ago, could trace his descc*it from the Arawa, Tainui, Matatua, Kutahupo, Aotea, and Tokoinp.ru canoes, and was therefore of high lineage. As the successor to Tuma Kaha, the greatest tohunga and carver of the Arawa tribo, he was a living repository of Maori loro, and, with his death, many of the old-timo waiat.is will bo lost. ; In his youth Anaha took a prominent part in tho battle_ of Tumu Kaituna in 1836, and, with his cousin, Major Fox, took part in engagements in which the loyal Arawaa fought for Queen Victoria. Ho also fought with tho ATawas against To Kooti. Anaha was the first and last Native assessor to sit ivitli a Resident Magistrate. Owing to the smallpox regulations, there will be no tangi.
