COMPETITION IN FRENCH,
THE MEDAL WINNERS.
Tho examiners recently appointed to conduct tho competition for a gold medal and a silver medal offered by the Cerclo Francais presented their report at a meeting of tho Gercle hold last evening; The examiners reported that they had examined twenty com: petitors of whom eight showed marked. proficiency in tho French language. They pointed out that no fewer than eight of the-'competitors had gained 80 per cent, or over of , the maximum number of marks—namely, 300. The examiners recommended that the gold medal bo awarded to Basil H. Howard, of St. Patrick's College (274 marks), and the silver medal to Madeline Butterworth, of' Chilton House School (270.7). In regard to the latter medal, it was pointed out that under ordinary circumstances Dorothy Evans, of Chilton House School (271) would have been the winner, but that as slio had gained the silver medal at tho competition held last year she was only eligible as a competitor for the gold medal. The examiners further recommended that certificates of "honourable mention should be presented to those competitors who had gained SO per cent, or over of the maximum number of marks. These were:—Celestin Duflou, St. Patrick's College (268.7), Dora Pope, Wellington Girls' College (261.3). Frances Muter, Chjlton House School (247.7), Marjorie Wilcox, Wellington Girls' College (242), and Mary Collie, Chilton House School (240). In order to encourage competitors who have only studied the French language for a comparatively short period tho examiners also recommended that good progress certificates should bo issued to John Stockman, Wellington Boys' Collcgo (224) jmd Rita M'Kclrey, Wellington Girls' College (219.3). Tho report was adopted, and it was decided that tho medals and 'certificates should'be presented to the successful competitors at the annual fete to be held at the end of the current session of the Cercle. In the meantime the marksheets of each candidate will be sent to the principals of tho schools interested.'
