AT THE MARKETS.

COMPETITION FIIOM THE SOUTH. The first of tho southern supplies of rhubarb, from tho South camp to hand yesterday morning. It is common knowledge among buyers that rhubarb grown in Canterbury is greatly superior to that grown locally. Whether the climate or soil is responsible for this it is not easy to say, but tho fact remains. Southern rhubarb is _ darker in colour, has a smoother skin with ,a satin sheen, and inirariably is not ribbed at all, as is the local product.

Canterbury growers appear to be making a bid to increase tlieir liold on the Wellington market. Hitherto supplies of cauliflowers liavo been forwarded in sacks from the South, with tho result that a proportion of tho contents of each sack became bruised in the handling at both eiids. 'Phis season a large proportion of the cauliflower con'signmepts are coming to hand in crates, and this greatly eliminates tho risk, of bruising. Theso points, in tho marketing of every-day lilies, are worth much hard cash to the producer.
