UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD.
6 RESULT OF THE POLL. A keen and interesting election contest took place at Upper Hutt yesterday, tho occasion being the by-election for the return of a Town Board Commissioner. There were two candidates, Mr. Wm. Greig, and Mr. A. J. M'Curdy (ex-Town Clerk). For some time past the contest has been arousing interest, and it was considered in certain quarters that the return of Mr. M'Curdy would amount to a vote of no-confidence in those commissioners who voted for his removal from office. When the count was made last night, it resulted in the election of the former Town Clerk by two votes and a recount mado the tally exactly the same. The figures were as follow: — M'Curdy, Angus J 232 Greig, William 230 Informal 7 Total votes 469 _ Subsequently the candidates and their nominators addressed tlio crowd present. 1 The first Chinese bigamy trial that bas over taken place has just ended in Wu Chan Tso being sentenced to 80 days' imprisonment; by a mixed Court at Shanghai. The prosecution was instigated by the Chinese Women's Suffrage Society. _____
