RAILWAYS & RACES.
POINT FOR GENERAL MANAGER. "The railway arrangements, always a very sore point with us, have fortunately this year been somcwhnt less troublesome," remarked tho Wellington Racing Club's president (Mr. J. B. Harcourt) whon addressing members _at tho annual general meeting last night. "Wo do not wish to reflect ill any way upon those in control, as we appreciate the many difficulties they have to contond with in carrying thousands of peoplo over a single line for 17fr miles; but had our courso been situated on the lino of any pri-vately-owned railway, I venturo to say that for this revenue alone, duplication ' would long ere this have been carried out. The scrvico us it is at'present run is very inconvenient to tho public, and must' bo even more so to tho Railway Department,' and we look forward to the time when the weight of public opinion alono will necessitate .the duplication of tho railway to tho Upper Hutt, if only as a business proposition. At present it takes forty-fivo minutes to run a through tro,iu 17J miles. Perhaps our new General Manager for Railways will note this point, and we look to liim to romody it."
