NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Bx Glencoe.] Tlio Wanganui mooting will concludo to-day. Tho two hack races at this meeting aro to be contested by big fields, and tho results may bo hard to forsee. The two Mauiopoto horses, Rewi I'oti and Toa Toro, arc oxpcctcd to bo tho favourite selections, but they meet their opponents on much worso terms to-day, and would loso 110 prestige were they to meet with defeat. Should another victory go to thorn it is safo to say that tlie pair will bo at tho top of the handicaps as long as tlioy aro in the hack class. Kcw, who is top weight in tlio Railway Handicap event ran a sterling rnco 011 Thursday and should be improved by tho gallop. He is such a smart beginner that ho is always able to command a good position in the early part of the race. Sunbird will again como in for strong support, but tho Martian filly is not a good beginner, and this will be a big disadvantage. to lier. There is no doubt about tho merit of Mr. Alexander's filly if only she can get a lucky run. This, however, is a big "if." 111 the Open Flying Handicap only six horses have paid up. Postillion's form oil the first day was too bad to reconimeiul him to-day. Morry Frank received a bump at the barrier rise, but 110 should jump out elenr to-day. Makara will be a stono better hores to-day, for it was' noticeable 011 'Ibursday that ho blew badly after his race. Plainlv lie was in want of a gallop. Ths first day's winner, Tree Lucsrns, inssts his field
on 131b. worse, tornis only, for lie carried -lib. overweight on Thursday. Ho won with such ease in the Fl.viiiK Hnndicap that ho should ho much fancied today. Goodwin Park may find his rise of 1211). enough to stop him in the Hurdles to-dny, for it is a furlong less, and the Fordell Holding only got up in the last few strides. In the Okehu Hurdles, tlie two Maorinamed animals will go very fast over tho first mile, and the better conditioned of the pair should win. Phroso's great reputation should send her out favourite in the Aramoho Hurdles. Slie is likely' to uive a much improved exhibition to-day, for a raco over fences generally works a lot for a maiden performer. Ten horses have accepted for the lTiggio Handicap, one mile and a quarter, and the issue looks open. Mira should run better to-day, for liu will not be required to be bustled so much in the early part of the race. Mulga Bill is to be ridden by AY. Dell, and lie is certain to carry a lot of support, for bis Otaki races have brought him on a lot. Peroneal will be another fresh liorsc, and will be quite at home on the circular track. No doubt lier rider will Jiavc instructions to win from end to end. Leonta should be tlie actual favourite, for be was right .up with the placed horses on Thursday, and the extra furlong and a half will suit'him. On the other hand, ho may not get such a lucky run as he did in tho Spring Handicap, but as the tactics of C. Prico worked so well on Thursday no doubt he will repeat them to-day, and keep to tho big Conqueror gelding on tho outside the whole wav. Con the Sliaughraun is the best of tho light-weights. Only five runners will fcontest the Marangai Handicap. Broil zo and Mallard will bo bracketed. Tlie Higlulen mare may run a great doal better today. for she will be meeting a smaller field, anil is not likely to jcet any interference. Gold Crest'may be the favourite selection, as ho was certainly unlucky to lose the Spring Handicap. Tho stewards of the Ashburton Racing Club met yesterday and disqualified R. J. Taylor for fivo years for making a bogus sale of the four-year-old gelding Glenor prior to tho Aniberlev meeting. Tho alleged buyer was A. Henderson, and ho was disqualified for sis months. —Press Association. >
