(From Oar Special Corrcepon'ient.) * .Mr. (jieig, a candidate . tor the vacancy on the Upper liutt Town Hoard, addressed a r largo meeting last evening. Tho chairman of the Town Hoard (Mr. I{. 11. Webb) presided, and Jlr. Craig's committee was present on the platform. The chairman remarked that Jlr. Crcig had resided in the district for upwards of twenty-livt: years, and he had been identified with ninny progressive movements there, notably" the removal of the, public school to its present central position. The candidate v.as accorded a good reception. and after giving a general outline of 'his policy, mentioning many projects which he had at heart in the interests of the electors, he gave his assurance that if clccted he would fully avail himself of his extended opportunities of serving the people. .Alter ilr. Greig had answered various cjiioklions, members of the Town Bo,aril addressed the meeting. The Petone Salvation Army Barracks was crowded < last evening, the occasion being the rendering of the cantata "The Garland of Flowers," liv children from the Wellington Salvation Army Home. The platform was decorated, and "each child represented some particular llower. The little songsters gave an excellent performance, and were trained by Staff-Captain Hoi and Cadet. Andrews. A demonstration of physical drill was also given by the children as taught by Captain Simmons (Defence Force). ' A dance was held in St. Augustine's Hall, Petone, last evening, under tinauspices of Jlrs. Pollock's private assembly. Mr. William Greig, si candidate for tile Upper fclutt Town lioard election, addressed about 300 electors in the Town Hall oil Thursday evening, Jlr. 11. H. W'chb (Town Board chairman, presiding. The candidate, in a fifteen minutes address, outlined his poliej, establishment of a gasworks and the formation of a lire brigade. He had resided in Upper liutt many years, and had, lie hoped, done 'yeoman service for the residents as a member (and more reeenUy chairman) of the local School Committee. The candidate received a vote of thanks, after which Commissioners Kemp and Robertson asked for support for him. Commissioners Bennington' (who was invited to speak as Mr. M'Curdy's nominator) took exception only to the manner of the latter's dismissal, not' the fact of it, and asked electors to remember that Mr. "Greig's opponent was ill reality fighting hoard members, who, in his belief, had wronged hijn, and not Mr. Gtcig, who was an honourable and a worthy opponent. The. leading members of Jlr. Greig's committee were also o'.i the platform, but the only one to speak (Jlr. Davis) was not allowed to pioceed far, hostile demonstrations being made. The meeting was an orderly one, and about evenly? divided in opinion. Meanwhile, interest is at concert pitch, as the return of. tho dismissed clerk practically would mean that a jury (tho' electors) disagree with the action of the judges (the' commissioners).
