SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC.

In tho Federal House ot Representatives, replying to a question, Mr. Cook (the Primo Minister) said that, personally, ho would not tako tho responsibility of removiug the quarantine embargo from Sydney.' Sydney, September 25. Mr. Glynn, Federal Minister for Home Affairs, has replied to tho Lord Mayor of Sydney that any check to business experienced in Sydney is due to the. presence of smallpox, not to the Commonwealth, imposing quarantine. The matter, however, is, he adds, receiving consideration. , I Dr. Cuinpston, tho Federal Director of Quarantine, is of opinion that there is no possibility of doubt that tho disease is smallpox—true, but not virulent —but he says it is not possible at present to forecast whether tho mild type will continue. Tho Federal and New South Wales authorities agree that Australia and Now Zealand got tlio smallpox from San Francisco. The only point at issue is whether Now Zealand passed tho disease on to Sydney or was Sydney infected separately. The New South Wales authorities believe the latter. A message from Thursday Island states that tho steamer Tasman, from Sourabaya, had a case of smallpox aboard. The patient was landed at Macassar. (Rec. September 26, 0.15 a.m.) Sydney, September 25. Four cases of smallpox were reported to-day. (Reo. September 25, 9.15 p.m.) Adelaide, September 25. The caso of smallpox reported here a few days ago is now declared not to bo such'.
