Tho distressed and needy of Auckland lost .a good friend by the death of Sister Frances, whoso appeals through tlio press at Christma-stido for assistance for tho poor' are well known, states an; Auckland exchange. _ Sister Frances was tho widow of Captain. Many years ago, with Sister Charlotte, the deceased jady started tho Streets and Lanes Mission, founded by the then Vicar of- St. Miiti-how's -An?' 1 ' can Chureh, the Rev. Lyttelton I'-'itz--gerald. At first operations were carried on in- a small cottage in. Grey Street, but in 1894 a public meeting was hold-in-St. Matthcw'-s Church, presided over by the Primate (Dr. Cowio). Tlio mission was put on a sounder basis, Bishop Cowio being appointed president. Mid tlio' Ven. Archdeacon Dudley, of tho Church of the Holy Sepulchre, vicepresident, with the Rev. Fitzgerald as chaplain and dircotor, and the Rev. U . E. Gillam secretary, and Mr. 1/. J. Kenderdine treasurer.' On the committee were Mrs. Coivie, Miss Tyo, andi Mr. Robert Walker. Tlio Mission to the Streets and Lanes then • became the Order of tho Good Shepherd', which ■has done' excellent work in Auckland 1 . Sister Frances was a faithful worker, and her retirement 11 few years ago on account of failing health wa,s much ro■rretted.
