Tho lata Sir William Russell wag buried yestorday afternoon in the S'apier cemetery. Tho funoral was very largely attended, among thoso present being: Tho Hon. H. D. Bell, representing tho Ministry, and Captain Shawo, ' Military A.D.C., representing His Excellency tho Governor. An impressive Funoral service was held at the Cathedral.—Press Association. Tho following officers have _ been transferred from tlio 9th (Wellington East Coast) Regiment to ilio sth (Wellington) Regiment, with their present seniority:—Major Fleming Ross, Captain T. W. Slmn, Lieut. B. R. Lank'' shear. Sir Joshua Williams and Mr. Justice Dennistou wore passengers by tlie Wa* hino which left Lyttelton for Welling' ton last evening. His Honour Mr. Justice Chapman returned to Wellington from Mastertou last evening. Tho Hon. E. C. J. Stevens and the Hon. C. M. Luko were passengers for the south by the Mararoa last evening. Mr. Harold L. Foster (son of Mr, W.' G. Foster, of tho Wellington Meat Export Company), whoso death- was reported yesterday, was. chief officer of tho P. and 0. linor/Banca. Tho deceased, who was 38 years of age, died on board tho vessel on September 13 From malarial fever, and was buried at sea. Ho was on a visit to Wellington last year, and went down to the pliathams as a passenger on tlio Himitangf when that steamer went ashore at WaU tangi. : Mr, 'A'. A. Paapo, who haß lately been appointed organiser for tho Reform League, was tho subject of soma flattering remarks at last night's meeting of the executivo of the Carnival Association. At tho close of tho busk ness, the Mayor (Sir. J. P. Luke) expressedl regret that Mr. Paapo's now duties would prevent liig taking such' a prominent part in tho work connected with the carnival. His efforts had been responsible for, a considerable measure of tho success of tho last carnival, and he would carry away to his new office the good wishes of tho ex-; ccutivo and' of tho peoplo of Wellington. Councillor Fletcher and 1 other* members of tho executive, endorsed the Mayor's remarks. Mr. Paapo, in. thanking tho executive, said that, although his new duties would carry him away from Wellington a good deal, ho would still take an active interest in tho work of tho association.
Mr. 13. Y. Bevan, of Messrs. Lovin and Company's local staff, has returned to Wellington after a fortnight's holiday at Rotorua. ■' Captain Strang, Marino Superintendent for the Uniou Company, left Lytteltoii for Wellington last evening. . Ohisholm has been elected- vice-preai-'' dent. Messrs. 11. P. Grevillo, Joha\ Wright, and E. Boocock have been appointed to fill vacancies on. tho com-' mittee. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces ofacers' Decoration has been awarded to Quartermaster (hon. Lieut.) Alexander* Ferguson, Btli (Southland) Regiment, who has a total service of over 20 years,. Sergt.-Major Hugh Montgomery, of tho Now Zealand Garrison Artillery, has, been awarded tho Colonial Auxiliary Force long servioo medal. Ho has a record of service extending over twenty years. Notification {has been received thai! the Secretary of State for the Oolonies\ has recognised tie appointment of'Mr, W. H. D. Bell, M.F.j as vico-oonsul, for Spain, at Wellington, with juris* diction throughout tho Dominion. Mr. J. B. Jordan has been appointed secretary 'of tho Government Stores' Purchase/ Board. Mr. J. A. Macauley, of Oakland, Cali- : fornia, and Mr. Franklin Holding, and Mr. Paul Dufault, of' Now York,, ar- : rived at Wellington yesterday', and have made tho Grand Hotel their headquarters.
