LEAGUE & LEAGUERS.
AN ACT BY CITY COUNCIL. Wha't is regarded by the League authorities here as a piece of pin-pricking bv the- City Council has just taken place. The attendance at tho two recent League matches —N.S. Wales _,v. Wellington, and N.S. Wales v. New Zealand —was as far as competent judges could make out something a little over 6000. The League authorities havo no power to charge for juveniles under 15 years of age, and they had. in fact, issued free invitations to all the schools ill Wellington and suburbs. It is thought that about 2000 out of the total of 6000. present wore -thus on tho free list, for tho League accounts and gate checks indicated a paying gate of about 4000. -The gate for the first match was £214 10s. and for the second £220. Out of these sums tho council rccoived £42 and £43 respectively— the checking of tho gates being under the control of tho League. It now seems, however, that some councillors havo got it into their heads that the gate ran as high as 8000. At all events they havo now decided to put on gatemen of their own. This arrangement will be given offect.to next Saturday. Mr. M. J. Reardon, who is at the head of the Leaguo movement in the city, informed a Dominion reporter last night that lie had received a message to attend at tlie Town Hall yesterday. On arrival thore he was informed (much to his surprise) by tho Town Clerk that the City Council was not satisfied with tho returns that were being sent in as a Result of the last two Saturdays. For that reason lie requested Mr. Reardon te produco tho accounts in connection therewith. The request was immediately complied with. - The Town Clerk then further astonished Mr. Reardon bv asking whether thero was any banking account- other than the one referred to and was informed there was not. It is understood that this action by the City Council will come up for very serious discussion at an early meeting of the League, which Mr. Reardon intends to call. TARANAKI& AUCKLAND. New Plymouth, September 25. In a League game to-day, which was played before a large attendance, Taranalci defeated Auckland by 21 points to 11. The victory was mainly due to the superiority of tbo Taranaki forwards, who played 1 a sterling game.
