RUGBY CODE. THE TRAMWAYMEN'S M.ATOH. Tho annual Rugby match for tho KOIIII Shield was played between the Wellington and Auckland • Tramway staffs at Newtown Park 011 Thursday. At half-time the visitors led by 6 points to nil, Joiles having scored a try and Matt-news a goal from a mark. 111 tho second spell Hawkins scored a try for Wellington. Wainwright scored again for Auckland, and Anderson converted. Tho game thus ended m a win for Auckland by 11 points to 3. REUNION AFTERWARDS. After tho match the Wellington. Tramway Employees entertained the northern visitors at a smoke concert at the TM'en rooms. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided. During the course of a short speech, tho chairman congratulated the.winning team, -and said that the opening of the Main Trunk line had brought Auokland and _ Wellington closer together, and the interests of one would coincide with tho interests of the other. He expressed pleasure at seeing so many of the Wellington men present at the function, and he welcomed Mr. W. T. Noot, secretary of the Tramway Union. On behalf' of tho Wellington City Council ho assured- the visitors that anything that the council could, do to make their visit pleasurable would be done. The tramway represented much in a city's life, and tlio _ .people who wore looking on and criticising were often not capable of taking one sido or the other. Incidentally 110 mentioned that the tramway services were good, and that Wellington was wise enough to keep them in the municipality. The people at the head of the tramways had two obligations to perform—ono to the people and one to the staff. Any man, lie said in - conclusion, who did not have the interests of the employees at heart should get out of .public life' as soon as possible. Messrs. J. Richardson (manager) and J. Hall (captain), of the Auckland team, in short speeches thanked the Wellington Tramway Employees and others for the good time which they had had. In proposing the toast of "The Wellington City Council," Mr. Noot praised the manner in which the Tramways Board had always met the union in matters affecting the interests of the employees'. Mr. briefly responded. Other toasts were_ honoured, and a number of musical items were contributed. TEAM TO PLAY WAIRARAPA. Tho following team has been selected for the match against Wairarapa at Masterton on Saturday next:—Parker, Young, J. Ryan, E. Ryan, Kinvig, M'Leod, Boyd, Hills, Francis, R. Paton, 11. Paton, A. Wilson, Miller, Bell, Cunningham. The team leaves on Saturday morning by the 7.50 train, returning the same night. Should any of the above find themselves .unable to play they are requested to notify the secretary of tho Union.
